A development has been achieved in the identification method of the charges 1 to 5 of nuclides from the decay of double hypernuclei to be uniquely recognized by their nuclear species. The method is basically the measurement of track volume by the widths, depths, and angles of tracks of exposed nuclei of $$^{1}$$H, $$^{4}$$He, $$^{7}$$Li, $$^{9}$$Be, and $$^{11}$$B in nuclear emulsion at Riken Projectile-fragment Separator of RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. After their calibration by $$alpha$$ particles, we obtained a quadric function to present a unified recognition of tracks with volume ratios of five nuclei to the $$alpha$$ particles. The function in the emulsion has been applied to a candidate event of a $$Xi$$ hypernucleus for identification of the production and decay processes. We succeeded in recognizing a daughter nuclear fragment of a single-$$Lambda$$ hypernucleus as $$^{6}$$He with a likelihood ratio of 0.9; the process was then uniquely identified as $$Xi$$$$^{-}$$ + $$^{14}$$N $$rightarrow$$ $$_{Lambda}$$$$^{9}$$Be + $$_{Lambda}$$$$^{5}$$He + $$n$$.

Double hypernuclei experiment with hybrid emulsion method at J-PARC

Ekawa, Hiroyuki; J-PARC E07 Collaboration*

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 8, p.021019_1 - 021019_6, 2015/09

Double hypernuclei are important probes to study the system with strangeness $$S$$ = -2. A double hypernucleus $${}^{6}_{LambdaLambda}$$He was clearly identified in the KEK E373 experiment. We are planning an upgrade experiment to search for double hypernuclei at the J-PARC K1.8 beam line. In the experiment, the KURAMA spectrometer system will detect $$Xi^-$$ production in the $$(K^-, K^+)$$ reaction on a diamond target. Tracks in SSDs and emulsion will be automatically connected by a hybrid method. This statistics is more than 10 times as high as that of the KEK E373 experiment. Discoveries of more than 10 new double hypernuclear species are expected. On the other hand, we will also observe $$X$$ rays from $$Xi^-$$ atoms with a Germanium detector array. This will be the first measurement in the world and give information on the $$Xi^-$$ potential shape at the nuclear surface region. In this talk physics motivation and current status of the J-PARC E07 experiment will be presented.

The fifth symposium on Science of Hadrons under Extreme Conditions, organized by the Research Group for Hadron Science, Advanced Science Research Center, was held at Tokai Research Establishment of JAERI on March 18 to 20, 2003. The symposium was devoted for discussions and presentations of research results in wide variety of hadron physics such as nuclear matter, hypernuclei, neutron stars, supernovae, nucleosynthesis, heavy-ion reactions, quark matter and quantum chromodynamics to understand various aspects of hadrons under extreme conditions. Thirty three papers on these topics presented at the symposium aroused lively discussions among approximately 50 participants. The concluding remark for the "research group for hadron science" and the explanation of next project "research group for manybody theory of hadron systems" was also presented by the group leader Dr. S. Chiba with gratitude to the participants and to all the scientists concerned.
